A CASA volunteer is a trained community volunteer appointed by a Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judge to advocate for the best interests of abused and/or neglected children in the court system.
CASA responsibilities:
Conduct an independent, fact-finding investigation of the case through communicating with the people in the child's life and/or through reviewing records. Monitor each party’s ( usually biological parents') compliance with court orders. Speak with parents, social workers, and other professionals to determine the circumstances of the child's situation. Review relevant documents and records. Visit each child once per month through in-person or virtual visits. Attend court hearings a few times a year. Participate in ongoing communication with the Advocate Manager, including a monthly report/update. Maintain confidentiality in all matters related to the case. Maintain appropriate boundaries with children, families, and professionals. Submit a CASA court report and court report updates as needed ( usually around 2-3 times per year). Complete a minimum of 12 continuing education hours per year ( listen to podcasts, read books, watch relevant movies, or attend training)
Qualifications:
- Must be 21 years of age and hold a valid driver's license
- Commitment to a minimum of 1 year
- Be able to provide 3 references and pass all screenings and background checks
- Successfully complete Preservice Training ( 30 hours)
- Have sufficient time to perform duties, an average of 10 hours a month
- Possess computer and technology skills ( Google workspace, zoom etc)
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships
