BOD FAQs

1. How does someone get appointed to The Haven’s Board of Directors?

The Haven’s Nominating Committee is responsible for finding Board candidates that meet the needs of the Board. Every effort is made to see that each county that we serve is represented on the Board, that the race, gender, and age make-up of the Board is reflective of the community that we serve, and that the various areas of expertise necessary to run an effective Board of Directors are represented. The Nominating Committee recruits, interviews, and makes recommendations to the Board.

2. When does The Haven’s Board meet?

The Haven’s Board of Directors meets at 6:00 PM on the first Thursday of the following months throughout the year: July, September, November, January, March, May and June. Though in-person participation is preferred, some of the meetings may be virtual, and when necessary, a virtual option to attend can be made available.

3. What other meetings would I be expected to attend?

The Haven’s Board of Directors is a “working board” meaning that directors are expected to be active in some way in moving the mission of the organization forward between regular meetings. All committees must be chaired by a director. As the need arises, the Board may establish other committees.

4. What would the time commitment be?

Regular Board meetings occur the first Thursday in July, September, November, January, March, May, and June. Committees meet in the other months, as needed. In addition to meetings, Board members can expect to spend time preparing for meetings, following up on tasks for special projects, and supporting fund raising and awareness activities. We estimate that on average, Board members will likely dedicate between 50 and 60 hours per year to The Haven.

5. Is there a financial obligation for Board Members?

Each Board member is expected to make an annual donation to the organization. Many grantors consider this a concrete sign of support and want to know that every board member makes a financial contribution. There is no minimum contribution requirement. We ask each board member to give according to what s/he feels is meaningful and doable.

6. What are the terms of service for Board Members?

A Board term is three years. At the end of the first term, a Board member can elect to serve a second three-year term. After two terms, s/he is not eligible to serve on the Board for a period of one year.

7. What are the fund-raising obligations of a Board Member?

Approximately 40% of The Haven’s operating budget is funded by state and federal grants. The other 60% must be raised through donations, fund-raisers, foundation grants and thrift shop receipts. It is vital that Board members find how their particular skills can best be used to raise the necessary funds to keep shelter and support services available for survivors of domestic and sexual abuse in our community.

8. What training is provided to Board Members?

One of the most important things that all Board members can do for the organization is to know enough about The Haven, the work that we do, and the needs that we have, to be able to share our story in the community. Training is provided to help Board members have the basic information and comfort level necessary to understand the population we serve, promote our work, and garner community support.

Application Submission: If you’re interested in board service, start by completing the Prospective Board Member Application at havenshelter.org/boardservice and submitting a resume or summary of your background and experience by emailing our Executive Director, Ellen Yackel, with "Board Member Application" in the subject line. Applicants can also mail applications to PO BOX 1267 Warsaw, VA 22572.

Initial Conversation: We’ll then reach out to set up a time for you to meet with a current board member and/or staff member to learn more about The Haven, what board service entails, and to discuss your interests and potential contributions.

Board Approval: Final approval for new members takes place at the June Board meeting. In the interim you may be invited to observe board meetings, attend events, or volunteer to get a feel for the organization before the nomination process in June.

We are in need of volunteers to help run our book shoppe located at 7072 Northumberland Hwy in Heathsville.  The Book shoppe accepts used books which are scanned and put out in the store to sell or boxed up and sent to Baltimore.  Volunteers man the front desk, shelve books and greet customers.  We would love to have you join us Wednesday through Friday 10-4 and Saturdays 10-2.  Flexibility in scheduling is available.   We are specifically looking for substitutes and for a person to cover Friday afternoons from 1-4 starting in August. Join our team!

From tending our lovely mini Victorian garden to sprucing up flower beds and greenery around the grounds, we’re looking for volunteers who enjoy spending time outdoors and making things grow. NCHS has a Facebook account and a WordPress website that require weekly updates. The volunteer should not only have technical experience and artistic abilities, but will need to get involved with our organization to acquire a sense of what we do and what our standards are. Virtual work would be possible eventually. 

NCHS needs someone who can clean up our office computer. We need to move files from our desktop computer and save them on an external drive in an organized fashion, delete duplicate and unnecessary files and programs, and organize the remaining files in suitable folders. Must demonstrate knowledge and experience in practical computer technology and programming.

The NCHS museum requires a facelift and an inventory. The person who takes on this task will need to check our artifacts against our digital inventory. They will also need to organize the displays and should have experience in all aspects of creating informative, attractive displays. Familiarity with Word and Excel is required, as is the ability to photograph artifacts. This could be a task for two people. Experience with Word and Excel is needed. 

NCHS needs a person who can organize our genealogical and historical collections. This primarily consists of books, which have been catalogued but need to be checked against our digital list and updated. We also keep an identical file index. Many of our patrons like the old-style file. We also have maps, court records, scrapbooks, loose papers, paper files, and digital files that have not been organized or catalogued. Familiarity with Word and Excel is needed.  

NCHS needs someone familiar with general office duties and procedures to assist the executive secretary and learn how our office operates. Duties include answering the phone, greeting visitors, accepting payments, downloading and categorizing emails, filing documents (physical and digital), typing reports and letters, data entry and database management, and assisting staff.  Familiarity with Word and Excel is needed. There could be times when you would be needed more than one day a week.

The Lancaster Virginia Historical Society hosts public and members-only receptions with food for special events such as exhibit openings, lecture programs, the Christmas Open House, Annual Membership Meeting, Volunteer Appreciation Day, and Fundraisers like the Spring Gala.  Volunteers on the LVHS Hospitality Committee help plan these functions from choosing the dates and developing the invitations to planning the menus and decorating with flowers and greens. Hospitality Volunteers also help staff the kitchen, bar, and greeter table at special events, assist with set-up and clean-up, and often make in-kind contributions of food, wine, and supplies. 

Members of the Hospitality Committee typically like to cook, decorate, and pay attention to detail in scheduling and planning the receptions.  They usually enjoy working as a team. Time commitment varies according to the schedule and type of event.  Volunteers do not need to be available for every function.

Do you have an interest in local history? Would you enjoy meeting and talking with out-of-town visitors as well as other locals about Lancaster's history and heritage?

Volunteer Assistants, also sometimes called Docents or Receptionists, support the daily operations of the Museum at the Lancaster Virginia Historical Society by serving on the “front-line” of visitor services.  Museum Assistants help visitors with introductions to self-guided tours of the exhibits and historic buildings, book shop sales, general LVHS information, and local tourism materials. 

Typical duties include:

Volunteers may also opt for additional training to give guided tours. Flexible scheduling, as few as 1 to 4 days per month with 3-hour shifts Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays. Shift time of 11:00am-2:00pm is preferred, but 10:00-1:00 or 1:00-4:00 is possible. We also occasionally need Museum Volunteers at other days/times including weekends for special visitor open houses and group tour bookings.

Volunteer Research Assistants support the daily operations of the Dunton Library for Genealogy & History at the Lancaster Virginia Historical Society by assisting patrons in-person and virtually to search and use all publications, catalogs, finding aids, electronic resources, and other materials in the Library collection to answer questions about local history and family genealogies.

Research experience is helpful, but training is provided and you will work with an experienced volunteer until you are comfortable! An LVHS staff member will also always be nearby in Museum office.

Typical duties include:

Volunteers may use Library resources for personal research during “down time” while on duty or during other regular library hours.

Flexible scheduling, typically 1 to 4 days per month, with 4-hours shifts on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 11:00-3:00.  3-hour shifts of 10:00-1:00 or 1:00-4:00 are also possible.

In emergencies, MRC Volunteers provide the additional staffing needed to save lives by helping public health teams distribute medication and by offering medical and mental health care. 

The MRC also supports public health at other times by assuring accessibility to health care, improving healthcare literacy, and partnering with other organizations that promote public health and healthcare education, such as CPR and STOP THE BLEED® trainings.

Be a Café Counter Volunteer — Just 4 Hours!

Want to help in the café without feeling overwhelmed? We’ve created a relaxed, supportive volunteer role that’s perfect for friendly people who enjoy being part of the energy without taking on full responsibility. Open Thursday through Saturday.   Work one shift or many, it's up to you.

What you’ll do:
• Welcome guests at the order counter
• Shadow an experienced café team member
• Write order tickets (no cash handling!)
• Deliver food and help bus tables
• Keep the café warm and welcoming

What you won’t do:

Adoption Support:

Assist with reviewing adoption applications to help ensure the best matches between our cats and their potential forever homes. This may include conducting home visits, interviewing applicants, and providing adoption counseling. Help promote adoptable cats by capturing high-quality photos and engaging videos. Transport Volunteers

A simple drive can change a cat’s entire future. Transport Volunteers help move cats from GRI to veterinary appointments, foster homes, partner cat cafés, and no‑kill rescue partners.  These trips place cats where adoption demand is stronger and ensure they receive timely medical care.

When you drive for GRI, you’re not just transporting a cat — you’re carrying them toward hope. It’s a small commitment with a big impact.

What You’ll Do: 

Provide safe, reliable transportation.  Move cats to rescues, clinics, cafés, and foster homes.  Support GRI’s mission with care and professionalism. 

Requirements: 

Valid driver’s license

At least 18 years old

Ability to lift up to 20 pounds

Comfortable driving at night when needed

You may use your own vehicle (mileage may qualify as a charitable tax deduction) or drive GRI’s van.

What does a Foster Parent do? As an approved foster parent, you agree to take a Garfield’s Rescue homeless adoptable cat/kitten(s) into your home and give him/her love, care and attention, either for a predetermined period of time or until the cat/kitten is adopted. How do I sign up to be a foster parent? Fill out our foster application, once approved, we will work with you to figure out the right foster cat/kitten(s) for your household. General Requirements:

· Age: Have to be at least 18 years old with a clean driver’s license.

· No History of Animal Cruelty: You must not have a history of animal cruelty, neglect, or abandonment.

·Foster Agreement: You will need to sign a foster care agreement which outlines your responsibilities and Garfield’s expectations.

· Prior Experience: While not always required, prefer foster parents with some experience caring for cat/kitten(s). · Landlord Approval: If you rent your home, you'll need to obtain permission from your landlord to house cat/kitten(s).

· Home Environment: You need a safe, clean, and secure home for the foster cat/kitten(s) with a designated space separate from other pets.

· Quarantine: You may need to isolate the foster cat/kitten(s) from other pets in your home for a period of time (e.g., 14 days) to prevent the spread of disease and do a proper pet introduction.

· Time and Ability: You must be able to dedicate the time and resources necessary to provide care for the foster cat/kitten(s), including feeding, cleaning, and providing enrichment and socialization.

· Reliable Transportation: You need to be able to transport the cat/kitten(s) to vet appointments, adoption events, and other necessary locations as needed.

· Communication: You need to be able to communicate effectively with the Director of Fosters or Manager of Volunteers, keeping them informed about the cat's/kitten’s health and well-being.

Specific Requirements May Vary:

· Vaccinations and Spaying/Neutering: All household pets must be up to date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered before being placed in foster parent care.

· Medical Care: Garfield’s is responsible for all medical costs. You will need to seek pre-authorization for veterinary treatments from the Director of Fosters, ·

Follow-Up: You are required to monitor the cat's/kitten’s health, record any changes, and seek approval from the

Director of Fosters for follow-up vet care.

· Other expenses: Garfield’s is responsible for ALL expenses involved with fostering and Garfield’s provides ALL supplies needed to foster.

· Adoption Events: You may be asked to bring the foster cat/kittens(s) to adoption events to help find them a permanent home.  Fostering provides an invaluable service to Garfield’s Rescue, Inc. (not to mention the pets themselves). It is a great way to learn about your own needs as a pet parent.

A valid driver's license is required.  

A background check must be completed satisfactorily.

What you’ll do: Supervise and engage with kids during structured and free playtime. Assist in organizing and running games, crafts and educational activities. Foster a safe, inclusive, and positive space for kids to grow and explore. Support program staff and contribute to event setup and/or cleanup.

What we’re looking for: Volunteers to assist with children's activities a few times month or occasionally as your schedules permit. Reliability, energy, and a warm heart. No special experience needed—just your willingness to help in a fun, welcoming environment. Northern Neck CASA is seeking compassionate and dedicated volunteers to make a difference in the life of a child. CASA Advocates work with children and teens in the abuse and neglect system. CASA volunteers are appointed to be a voice for a child in court. Advocates gather information, meet with children and families, and report their findings. Volunteers must pass a background check and participate in 40 hours of pre-service training. Volunteers will visit a variety of locations, including the child's home, school, the homes of caregivers, and the courthouse for hearings.

We are seeking a compassionate individual to assist in trapping cats and kittens for spay/neuter and medical care as part of a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program. This role involves safely capturing cats and kittens from managed colonies, transporting them to veterinary clinics, and potentially providing temporary housing and care before and after surgery, ensuring their safe release back into their environment. The position also includes interacting with community members, caretakers, and local organizations involved in TNR efforts.

Key Responsibilities: Set up and monitor humane cat traps in designated locations. Safely transport trapped cats to veterinary clinics for spay/neuter and medical care. Communicate with colony caregivers and local rescue teams to inform them of trapping efforts and provide information to the public about the importance of TNR. Maintain records of trapping dates, locations, medical treatments, and the number of released cats. Maintain a supply of traps, bait, and other necessary equipment. Follow proper TNR protocols to ensure humane and ethical treatment, including vaccinating cats and ear-tipping colony cats before returning them to their original colony.

Must have a valid driver's license and be at least 18 years old.

NPL needs volunteers to cover staff lunches from 12-2 when a regular volunteers has to be absent.  We also need a permanent volunteer on Monday's starting in August from 12-2.  The volunteers will greet people when they come in, help patrons check in and out items and serve the public for that two hour time period. We are seeking a dedicated CERT volunteer with access to a truck and trailer to assist with transporting essential disaster response items—such as cots, blankets, medical supplies, and shelter equipment—to emergency shelters or staging areas during activations.

Do you like to write short catchy blurbs? Want to help a great cause?  TOGA - Tidewater Oyster Gardener's Assoc., needs you! We work to help get oysters in our Bay and tributaries, to filter and clean our local waters.

We need social media writer(s). TOGA has Facebook and Instagram pages and wants to put out 5-6 posts per week. We have a board member in charge of this endeavor who can guide you, yet need someone to help draft (and potentially post) short blurbs for posting on topics such as:

A volunteer TOGA board member provides supervision and guidance. TOGA's event schedule is posted online at www.oystergardener.org serves as the main focus for posts. Let us know if you are interested!

A docent would help staff the museum and act as a tour guide. We need volunteers to docent once a month for a 2 or 3 hour shift. We also need help with our field trips on occasion. 

Would you like to increase your knowledge of colonial history and Christ Church, while engaging with visitors and other volunteers who share your love of history? You could educate and inspire large groups of adult visitors to HCC&M by conducting specially-arranged tours while dressed in 18th century style clothing.
