As a Disaster Mental Health (DMH) Services Volunteer, you use your professional expertise to bring calm, compassion, and stability to individuals, families, and responders during some of their most challenging moments.

Who Can Serve:

This role is open to currently licensed or credentialed mental health professionals, including social workers, counselors, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, psychiatric nurses, school psychologists/counselors, and eligible retired professionals, in accordance with Red Cross requirements.

Greet visitors as they enter the James Monroe Birthplace and Boyhood Home.  Share facts about pictures and items in the Visitors Center.  Engage visitors until a docent is available to give a tour of the house.  Training and information provided.  

Andrew Horton dressed as a colonial seaman to attend Education Day at the annual Urbana Oyster Festival in November working with elementary and middle school students. He guided and expanded their understanding of colonial craftsmen from our area making bricks. Working with grinding oysters and mixing them together with our local clay, water and sand the students replicated building materials that were used to construct colonial buildings that still stand in Middlesex County today.

Museum volunteers Vel Gray and Claudia Soucek visited with MHS history students who toured the museum in April. They helped students with a scavenger hunt designed around the World War II exhibit including Middlesex veterans and their personal stories. The students heard a first-hand family account of Soucek’s uncle’s story of being shot down over France 4 days after D-Day.

New county resident Renee Loustaunau joined our pool of volunteers after visiting our tent at Arts in the Middle event. She began working with us researching and installing exhibits. She then transitioned to working with records related to our accessions. She has captured specific information on each item that has been donated to the museum which then allows David Jett to enter it into the computer system. She has also helped with research into the background information about the objects and the time period that they came from. 

New volunteer David Jett has helped us with accessions work on the computer by inputting donated items and their specific details into our PastPerfect software program. This allows access to the information for future exhibits and community talks.

Stephanie Mulligan has helped as a volunteer with our accessions. She has helped clean historic textiles that were from the 1920s. Utilizing a slow soaking processing, she removed decades of dirt, dust, and mite dander from fragile fabric. They show beautifully after drying in the sun. We have added her latest work to the collection of children's clothing here in the main museum.

This event is a celebration of life that hosts over 100 of the descendants of Menokin's enslaved community.

Hello Members and Friends of Belle Isle State Park! The focus of our regularly scheduled second quarter meeting will be the upcoming Music By the River Series. Please consider the lineup for the 2026.

We need “Boots on the Ground” leadership for the execution of the excellent roster of musicians Robert Mason has obtained for us. Thank you Robert, for once again setting up an excellent season of musical entertainment for us! Our State Partners are asking us to step up, and clean the popcorn machine ourselves. We, of course, will need someone to volunteer as lead for the staffing of each individual concert, and the cleanup.  Sarah did a wonderful job last year! Thank you!!!

Additionally:

• Brian will be giving a report on the Wildlife Camera & Treasurer’s Report.

• “The State of the Park.” from its management perspective will be presented.

• Rachel will speak on the many programs she runs for park visitors and at schools.

• We will entertain member’s suggestions and comments.

We need help manning the Audubon booth at the Heathsville Farmer's Market

We periodically need volunteers to assist with beautification and maintenance of our grounds and buildings to maintain a welcoming and attractive environment. This includes everything from scraping and painting windows and replacing deck boards to regularly raking trails and grounds to weeding, spreading mulch (and so much more!) to enhance the appearance of our outside spaces.

We need enthusiastic volunteers to help with the following activities this month!

1.  Spread mulch evenly across designated waterfront areas and tidy up the area after mulch distribution is complete.  

2.  Scrape, glaze & paint window sills on Tea House and tidy up afterward.

We greatly appreciate the support of our community members who are willing to contribute their time and energy to maintain the beauty of our buildings & grounds. If anyone or any group can give a few hours here and there to accomplish these tasks, that would be greatly appreciated.

We are a 501c3 Virginia non-profit (EIN available upon request) doing the hard work of habitat restoration at 1037 Tucker Hill Road, outside of Kinsale. We need a place to store our shovels, clippers, and bug spray! 

Colonial Beach Parks, Recreation, & Events is looking for help delivering flyers. Every month, on the first Tuesday of the month, we will have printed flyers available for pick up with a list of delivery locations. Sometimes locations are just outside of Colonial Beach, but most locations are within Town limits. Driver's license helpful! It's great if you have a vehicle and can interact with the location manager to post a flyer.  Pick up is any time between 9:00AM and 3:00PM. Don't worry if you're not able to deliver all the flyers. You can return unused flyers along with the location sheet to allow someone to pick up where you left off.

Trail & Grounds-Help maintain hiking trails, remove debris and keep park areas clean and safe.

Contact Station-Welcome guests, answer questions and help visitors learn about the park. 

Special Events & Programs-Help with educational programs, guided hikes and kids activities.

The site to be developed as River Roots Discovery Gardens is in Lancaster County, VA, on 14 acres of land behind the under-construction Lancaster County Middle/High School on Irvington Road.

All are welcome to visit the site which is accessed via Old St John's Road, the northernmost entrance road to the Hills Quarter Community.  Turn onto Old St John's Road.  The site is on the left just beyond the pond behind the high school.  Park across Old St John's Road in the gravel parking lot by the small yellow building.

Goal: Serve as “ambassadors for HCC&M,” with a welcoming, informative and positive approach as the first contact for visitors to the site. Responsibilities: ▪ Staff the front desk of the Reception Center. ▪ Answer general questions, explain the tour and collect admission fees. ▪ Sell Gift Shop merchandise and restock inventory as needed. Desired Results: Happy visitors and successful sales. Qualifications: ▪ Comfortable with interacting with the public in an outgoing and friendly manner. ▪ Comfortable with cash, check & credit card transactions using a computerized system. ▪ Enjoy learning history and basic knowledge of HCC&M. Time Commitment: ▪ At least 6 hours per month (two 3-hour shifts), April through November. ▪ Flexibility to serve as an occasional substitute is encouraged. Location: On-site at HCC&M. Training and Support: ▪ Spring Update & Training is strongly encouraged (3 days in March or early April). ▪ Training on using Point of Sales computer system provided. ▪ Experienced volunteers serve as a “buddy” to support new volunteers during initial shift. ▪ This position works closely with the Gift Shop Manager. Goal: Enhance visitors’ knowledge of Christ Church as an architectural treasure, a center of community life in the colonial period and a reflection of the Carter family. Responsibilities: ▪ Lead individual and small group tours of the Church and the grounds. ▪ Answer questions from visitors as they tour the museum. ▪ Understand the themes and content of The Red Book: A Guide to Historic Christ Church. Desired Results: ▪ Visitors provide positive feedback about their experience in written or verbal comments. Qualifications: ▪ Love of history and a willingness to learn about HCC&M and the Carter family. ▪ Comfortable speaking to small groups and presenting up to 3 such tours during a 3-hour shift. ▪ Ability to modify the presentation to fit the interests and time constraints of a group. The Middlesex County Museum & Historical Society has exhibit space in four different locations that explore our indigenous population, early marine life, Free and enlsaved individuals, indentured servants, plantations, farmsteads, military battles, soldiers, along with early residents and structures. 

Researchers needed to enhance the history behind the artifacts of the Middlesex County Museum and Historical Society. Being an unburned county, our historic records and artifacts run to the 1600's, and are a wealth of information. 

Genealogy researchers are also needed to support the uncovering of some of the earliest settlers who built large plantations to small farmsteads. The history of the indentured, free and enslaved citizens is sought after too.

Volunteer Fire and Rescue Support Personnel play a vital role in the success of emergency services by providing the operational, logistical, and administrative support that allows firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics to focus on emergency response and patient care. These volunteers contribute directly to the readiness, efficiency, and effectiveness of fire and rescue operations throughout the community.

Support roles may include equipment and supply management, apparatus and facility maintenance, administrative assistance, training and logistics support, scene rehabilitation, fundraising, public education, and community outreach. No firefighting or medical experience is required, and role-specific training is provided to ensure volunteers are prepared to safely and effectively support operations.

The Northern Neck Wooden Boat School is becoming an independent 501(c)(3) organization and is seeking dedicated leaders to serve on its founding Board of Directors. The School blends craftsmanship, STEAM education, and maritime heritage to serve youth and adults across the Northern Neck. As demand for our programs grows, strong governance is essential to guiding our next stage of development.

Board Members provide governance, financial oversight, and strategic direction. Responsibilities include: upholding organizational policies, monitoring financial health, contributing to fundraising, strengthening partnerships, and supporting program development and long-term planning.

Ideal candidates bring experience in education, maritime trades, business leadership, finance, governance, fundraising, marketing, community partnerships, or workforce development. A passion for youth development and heritage craftsmanship is essential.

Transport Volunteer – Be the Bridge to a New Beginning

Transport Volunteers play a vital role in giving cats a second chance by driving them from our shelter to trusted non-kill rescue partners in Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Northern Virginia. These transfers place cats in more populated areas, greatly increasing their chances of being adopted into loving homes.

Garfield's Rescue Volunteer Application

Join “Team Garfield’s” by Volunteering at Garfield’s Rescue “Cat Cottage” in Weems. Laugh with us, cry with us, play with us while giving abandoned cats and kittens a 2nd chance at life through our compassionate care.

Tasks include the cleaning and sanitization of cat crates and condos, litter boxes, and 2-story living areas that prevents the spread of disease among our cat population. Launder cat beds and linens; load dishes in dishwasher and put away; administer daily medications; daily feeding and providing fresh water. Provide socialization and comfort to cats and kittens inside Cottage. Keep cleaning supplies and food supplies unpacked at delivery and food and sanitation containers and tubs filled, reporting outages. Garfield’s also has a small outdoor cat colony on site requiring daily feeding, fresh water and care. The feeder and shelters require cleaning and sanitization, and the laundering of outside beds and linens. Volunteers work in teams of two, sometimes three, as we have an upstairs, downstairs, and small outside cat area to care for.

Much to do! We have a morning shift and an afternoon shift, 7 days a week. Select the day and shift that fits your schedule.

The Good News Pantry is a free, community food pantry located at Kilmarnock Town Hall, open 24/7 for anyone in need. Stocked with non-perishable foods and essential hygiene items, the pantry reflects the Town’s commitment to neighbors helping neighbors — no forms, no questions, just kindness.

We welcome donations of non-perishable food (like canned goods, pasta, rice, cereal, and peanut butter) as well as personal hygiene items such as soap, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, and feminine products. Items can be dropped off at Town Hall during regular business hours or placed directly in the pantry at any time.

Your in-kind donation helps us keep shelves full and hearts hopeful. Every can, box, or care item you give helps ensure that no one in our community goes without when times are tough.

ITDRC is recruiting Technology Oriented Professionals to join our Nationwide, All Volunteer Disaster Response Team.

Technical volunteers from all disciplines are needed to assist communities and community organizations with temporary communications, technical support, and community recovery following a disaster.

All technology skillsets are welcome. On site and remote support opportunities are available, and can be worked around your current schedule.

The Bay Center has three effective support groups in its Grief Support Series. One is the ongoing "Grief Support Group" which meets weekly. The second occurs twice a year and is designed to address the needs of those who are preparing for the eventual loss of a loved one and is titled "Expected Loss." The third is "Loss from Suicide" for persons who have lost someone through suicide. It meets twice a year.

We need a volunteer who can research the available resources that may assist each group's participants deal with issues such as sudden illness, terminal diagnosis, elderly issues, sudden health decline, death, living alone suddenly, organizations to donate, services to help navigate bill paying, medical issues, etc.

The volunteer will then produce a resource list by January of 2027, and be willing to update it from time to time. It should include the services available, a brief description of what each provides, and the appropriate contact information. 

The Lancaster/Northumberland Habitat for Humanity has an immediate need for volunteer work that will directly assist us in land acquisition and planning.  The schedule is flexible, 24 total hours which can be spread across days.

Tasks may include identifying property ownership history; verifying property boundaries; checking deed transfers, easements, and restrictions; reviewing tax parcel maps or GIS/property maps, and pulling up any relevant documents in county courthouse/clerk’s office

The interested volunteer should be someone with experience in some or all of the following areas: real estate, paralegal work, title searches, or land use/planning; familiarity with county land record systems (or willing to learn); good attention to detail, and able to work independently; comfortable doing some in‑person work at Lancaster County offices (if needed), and/or online research.

No special experience is needed to work on the houses under construction, and all tools are provided.  Most of our building occurs on Wednesdays and Saturdays and includes tasks such as painting, deck-building, and laying floors. 

Habitat homes can offer an incredible team building experience for local church groups, school clubs, and businesses.

Each year multiple schools and home school groups visit HCC.  Do you love to teach? Maybe you are a retired school teacher, camp director, or a grandmother / grandfather extraordinaire looking for a way to get involved and have fun! Our education committee chair does a fabulous job of organizing, but she needs more hands to help with school age children's programs.  We will provide all the tools you need to help inspire the next generation of history lovers.

Beautiful music deserves beautiful flowers. Every orchestral and chamber music performance is adorned with a floral arrangement. We seeking persons who have floral arranging experience and are willing to provide them for at least one of the nine performances of the current season September (2025) through May (2026). 

Deltaville Maritime Museum is seeking dedicated volunteers to help maintain and preserve the Explorer,  a living piece of maritime heritage. The Explorer is our full-scale replica of Captain John Smith’s shallop used during his 1608 exploration of Chesapeake Bay.  

We need assistance in the following areas:

·         Routine vessel care & maintenance

·         Monitor for signs of wear, weather damage, needed repairs.

·         Assist with minor maintenance tasks (e.g., oiling wood, checking lines, clearing debris)

·         Coordinate with museum staff for larger restoration needs.

·         Help prepare the vessel for special events or educational programs

Markets & Festival: Engage visitors & share the history and significance of the Explorer shallop.

Field Trips & Other Educational Events on site: As need arises. Volunteers are contacted via a "call to action" email they can RSVP to according to their availability.

Holiday-related Activities: Easter, Halloween

Off-Site Special Events and Appearances:  

The Explorer travels to special events, educational programs and sporadically makes other offsite appearances. We need volunteers to assist with event support and visitor engagement. On occasion, we also need assistance with transport to and from these events listed below.

The Northern Neck Orchestra Volunteer Guild

The Northern Neck Orchestra's volunteers work behind the scenes to provide essential services to the orchestra, the chamber music series and Chamberfest programs.  The orchestra has created a Volunteer Guild to augment the current pool of volunteers as its concerts continue to attract a growing number of concertgoers. Guild members may assume a variety of responsibilities while serving as ambassadors of the orchestra, such as:

Securing transportation for musicians

Providing overnight housing for out of town musicians

Arranging refreshments for musicians at rehearsals and concerts

Handling the front lobby at concerts: collecting tickets, distributing programs, assisting with seating and supporting the box office

Supplementing production staff with the stage management, lighting and sound

Placing roadside banners to promote concerts

Providing editorial support for orchestra communications

Identifying new staffing needs

Bon Secours offers wonderful opportunities for community members to volunteer in assisting the hospital in fulfilling its ministry of healing. Hospital volunteers are an important part of the day-to-day activities and complement the services provided by our associates. Volunteering at Bon Secours provides a unique experience filled with fellowship, camaraderie and the satisfaction of providing good help to those in need. BOD FAQs

1. How does someone get appointed to The Haven’s Board of Directors?

The Haven’s Nominating Committee is responsible for finding Board candidates that meet the needs of the Board. Every effort is made to see that each county that we serve is represented on the Board, that the race, gender, and age make-up of the Board is reflective of the community that we serve, and that the various areas of expertise necessary to run an effective Board of Directors are represented. The Nominating Committee recruits, interviews, and makes recommendations to the Board.

2. When does The Haven’s Board meet?

The Haven’s Board of Directors meets at 6:00 PM on the first Thursday of the following months throughout the year: July, September, November, January, March, May and June. Though in-person participation is preferred, some of the meetings may be virtual, and when necessary, a virtual option to attend can be made available.

3. What other meetings would I be expected to attend?

The Haven’s Board of Directors is a “working board” meaning that directors are expected to be active in some way in moving the mission of the organization forward between regular meetings. All committees must be chaired by a director. As the need arises, the Board may establish other committees.

4. What would the time commitment be?

Regular Board meetings occur the first Thursday in July, September, November, January, March, May, and June. Committees meet in the other months, as needed. In addition to meetings, Board members can expect to spend time preparing for meetings, following up on tasks for special projects, and supporting fund raising and awareness activities. We estimate that on average, Board members will likely dedicate between 50 and 60 hours per year to The Haven.

5. Is there a financial obligation for Board Members?

Each Board member is expected to make an annual donation to the organization. Many grantors consider this a concrete sign of support and want to know that every board member makes a financial contribution. There is no minimum contribution requirement. We ask each board member to give according to what s/he feels is meaningful and doable.

6. What are the terms of service for Board Members?

A Board term is three years. At the end of the first term, a Board member can elect to serve a second three-year term. After two terms, s/he is not eligible to serve on the Board for a period of one year.

7. What are the fund-raising obligations of a Board Member?

Approximately 40% of The Haven’s operating budget is funded by state and federal grants. The other 60% must be raised through donations, fund-raisers, foundation grants and thrift shop receipts. It is vital that Board members find how their particular skills can best be used to raise the necessary funds to keep shelter and support services available for survivors of domestic and sexual abuse in our community.

8. What training is provided to Board Members?

One of the most important things that all Board members can do for the organization is to know enough about The Haven, the work that we do, and the needs that we have, to be able to share our story in the community. Training is provided to help Board members have the basic information and comfort level necessary to understand the population we serve, promote our work, and garner community support.

Application Submission: If you’re interested in board service, start by completing the Prospective Board Member Application at havenshelter.org/boardservice and submitting a resume or summary of your background and experience by emailing our Executive Director, Ellen Yackel, with "Board Member Application" in the subject line. Applicants can also mail applications to PO BOX 1267 Warsaw, VA 22572.

Initial Conversation: We’ll then reach out to set up a time for you to meet with a current board member and/or staff member to learn more about The Haven, what board service entails, and to discuss your interests and potential contributions.

Board Approval: Final approval for new members takes place at the June Board meeting. In the interim you may be invited to observe board meetings, attend events, or volunteer to get a feel for the organization before the nomination process in June.

We are in need of volunteers to help run our book shoppe located at 7072 Northumberland Hwy in Heathsville.  The Book shoppe accepts used books which are scanned and put out in the store to sell or boxed up and sent to Baltimore.  Volunteers man the front desk, shelve books and greet customers.  We would love to have you join us Wednesday through Friday 10-4 and Saturdays 10-2.  Flexibility in scheduling is available.   We are specifically looking for substitutes and for a person to cover Friday afternoons from 1-4 starting in August.
